Yin and Yang – A Garden of Two Halves
Adam’s vision began with the dream of creating a Japanese-themed garden. However, after falling in love with a 150-year-old olive tree, the design evolved—blending modern, contemporary elements with subtle Eastern influences. This led to the creation of two distinct spaces: a sleek, modern main garden built around the olive tree, and a tranquil Japanese courtyard garden designed for peace and reflection.
To represent this balance, Adam chose black slate for the Japanese courtyard and grey porcelain for the contemporary garden—his interpretation of Yin and Yang. The transformation required significant hardscaping, including removing a grassy bank and constructing a retaining wall to mirror the home’s render, tying the whole design together.
On the upper tier, a former pergola base was repurposed into the ideal spot for a Cleo Microsilk hot tub. Sheltered on two sides and close to the house, the hot tub provides both privacy and convenience. The planned garden office will now be positioned on the lower tier.
Looking ahead, Adam intends to install a sleek aluminium or glass pergola to create a weatherproof connection between the hot tub area and the house. This will complete the vision, offering a covered outdoor kitchen and seating space that unites the two halves of the garden into a functional, harmonious retreat.
The garden has become a place of pride and relaxation, with the hot tub taking centre stage in weekly activities. With such effort and creativity, it’s no surprise Adam won Silver at the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards 2025 in the category of Best Domestic Hot Tub Under £7,000 for his outstanding design work with the Cleo Microsilk hot tub.
