A remarkable landscape transformation by Adam Hurlin has been officially recognised with a Silver Standard Award at the British Pool and Hot Tub Awards 2025, held in Coventry — a well-deserved accolade for a project defined by balance, vision and precision execution.
Titled Yin and Yang, the garden was conceived as two distinct yet harmonious spaces. The original ambition for a Japanese-inspired retreat evolved after the introduction of a 150-year-old olive tree, prompting a bold design shift. Rather than compromise, Adam embraced contrast — creating a contemporary primary garden centred around the olive tree, alongside a secluded Japanese courtyard designed for tranquillity.
Material choice played a central role in expressing this duality. Black slate anchors the Japanese courtyard, delivering texture and depth, while sleek grey porcelain defines the modern upper tier. The result is a refined interpretation of Yin and Yang — contrasting materials unified through proportion and flow.
The transformation required significant structural intervention. A sloped grassy bank was removed and replaced with a retaining wall carefully finished to mirror the home’s render, creating architectural cohesion between property and landscape. Every element was considered not only for aesthetics but for long-term practicality.
A pivotal moment in the design came with the repurposing of an existing concrete slab. Originally intended for a garden office, the space proved ideally suited for the installation of the Cleo Microsilk Hot Tub. Positioned close to the house and sheltered on two sides, the location offered both privacy and convenience. The spa now serves as the focal point of the contemporary garden, elevating the space from visually impressive to experientially exceptional.
The Cleo Microsilk’s advanced hydrotherapy system enhances relaxation and wellness, reinforcing the garden’s purpose as a functional retreat rather than simply a design statement.
Future plans include the installation of a modern aluminium or glass pergola to create a covered outdoor kitchen and seating area, seamlessly linking home and garden while completing the overall masterplan.
Earning Silver Standard recognition at a national industry awards ceremony reflects the calibre of Adam’s design thinking, attention to detail and commitment to creating a lifestyle-led outdoor environment. The result is a garden where structure meets serenity — and where the hot tub quite rightly takes centre stage in weekly life.
